Manganese in the Water Supply

The City of Sallisaw has advised us they are currently experiencing manganese in the water supply.  Since we purchase our water from Sallisaw, it is likely our members will notice this as well.  The manganese will cause discoloration of the water ranging from a green tint to a yellow tint.  The water is safe for consumption and Sallisaw is adjusting their treatment process to flush the manganese from the system.

Water temperature and weather changes are contributing factors to the increase in manganese.  The mineral occurs naturally in rocks and soil and is often found in both ground water and surface water.  Manganese is a trace mineral that is present in tiny amounts in the body.  It is found mostly in bones, the liver, kidneys and pancreas.  Manganese helps the body form connective tissue, bones, blood clotting factors and other hormones.  It also plays a role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism, calcium absorption, and blood sugar regulation.  It is also necessary for normal brain and nerve function.
